BOUYGUES UK enters into a strategic alliance with Lewisham College

To help develop the young builders of the future, Richard Bridgeford, Project Director for the Schools PFI Project, has been in discussions with John Stagg, the Head of The School of Construction and Technical Services at Lewisham College, to offer the Lewisham construction sites, as a practical training facility for their building students.

At the inaugural meeting on 7th November, various initiatives were proposed by both parties, which will be further debated by college managers. Once agreement has been reached in principle, a programme will be set up in order to link the curriculum and schedule of on-site activities in order to move forward in the most practical way.

Richard Pike and Anna Moore from Bouygues UK’s Human Resources will be holding a seminar in January 2007 for the College teaching staff and pupils, to outline the diversity of career opportunities that exist within the construction industry and in Bouygues UK in particular.

Bouygues UK recognises the importance of attracting new young blood into the construction industry and will contribute to this, by facilitating on-site visits, workshops and practical experience (where possible). These will complement the various programmes offered by the College and contribute towards the students’ project work.

Taking such initiatives is not new to Bouygues UK or the Bouygues Group. Indeed it is in the Group's culture to play an active role in the communities in which it operates whilst forming ongoing partnerships with its clients and users.

The Bouygues Group has been very active in developing and supporting a number of social or humanitarian initiatives such as the rebuilding of Baan Nam Kem School in Thailand which was devastated by the tsunami in December 2004.

The Francis Bouygues Foundation, set up in June 2005, implements public-interest initiatives in the education sector. Its objective is to help motivated school-leavers with financial difficulties to finance their studies and fulfil their professional ambitions.

In Barking, Bouygues UK developed a corporate social project focused on the playground at Eastbury Comprehensive School in 2004. The children acted as “designers” and produced a final design brief which they presented themselves to the school board. They were also involved in the procurement stage. Boosting children’s personal and social skills increases their self-confidence and allows them to appreciate the impact of their participation.
