Crofton School

Project Description

The school will be rebuilt as part of the Lewisham grouped schools PFI project in a live environment and will accommodate 1,200 pupils.

Existing School

Crofton Secondary school is an existing school, which has a leisure centre (now unused by the general public) as part of its complex. The school is typically 1970’s prefabricated concrete cladding panels and in a state of disrepair.

Proposed new school

The school (10,500m2) is designed to greatly enhance the learning and teaching environment from the classrooms, through the overall layout of the building, to making best use of the external areas. The new school facilities shall provide a greater amenity for the pupils, staff and the community.

  • A glazed “street” at the heart of the site will link the various teaching blocks and create a generously naturally lit focal area for school life.
  • New two-storey teaching blocks will be big enough to accommodate an increase to eight forms in each year (or an additional 300 pupils in the school)
  • The new school building will feature an attractive main entrance designed to cope with school activities and encourage community usage
  • The City Learning Centre shall be located on the site providing greater amenity to the school and accessibility for the wider community use.

External facades

The treatment of the coloured facades reinforces the clarity of the plan and ease circulation with discrete elements which represent a different function within the school. The facades take on the feel of a tapestry and the building will be sitting as a sculpture in the park.

The railway to the East of the site creates a high noise issue which the concrete construction minimises to the inside space. This not only improves the internal environment but adds to the articulation of the facades.

Construction phases

The construction of the works is carried out in 2 main phases and include the following:

Phase 1 - July 2006 to December 2007
Demolitions of the art block and admin building surrounding the sports and leisure hall
Erection of temporary classrooms to accommodate the areas that have been demolished
Hoard off the construction area, from the proposed school area
Erect contractor facilities
Construction and completion of blocks 1 to 4

Phase 2 - December 2007 to September 2008
Move the existing school and temporary classrooms into the new building
Remove the temporary accommodation from site
Demolish the remaining part of the existing school
Landscape and final completion

Safer Use of Tower Cranes - informative article

Tower cranes are a vital element in the construction process. There are around 15,000 cranes in the UK and at any time around a 1000 are in use. Tower cranes are often in use on construction sites in urban areas and collapses/failures are a very rare occurrence. There is legislation, standards, codes of practice in place, covering the design, manufacture and erection of tower cranes globally around the world today. Stringent and regular test regimes have been developed over many years to ensure the safe operation of tower cranes on construction sites. The Bouygues Group have an in-house Plant and Equipment subsidiary based France called “GIE” which owns and maintains all their own tower cranes for internal use only. Only the very highest standards are observed with these cranes resulting in a well maintained and safe fleet operational on all Bouygues construction sites world wide. Formal records of all certifications and regular tests are well documented, on all Bouygues site.
